About

Ron Semel
Architect

I am a professional architect in Richmond, Virginia.  I work for the Commonwealth of Virginia as State Capital Outlay Cost Review Architect and maintain a private practice.

My father taught me how to build and work with my hands in his wood shop.  At 10 years old, I decided to become an architect and have never wavered.

All four years of high school, I was fortunate enough to be in Gene Manfra's famed Architecture Studio.

In 1983 I enrolled in New Jersey Institute of Technology’s School of Architecture.  While in college, my design work was award winning.  On the side, I worked for architects, contractors and eventually began building homes using advanced construction techniques.  As a result, I have a keen understanding of the constructability and cost of my designs as an architect.

I have designed a wide range of projects from simple home additions to highly complex MRI suites.  I am passionate about being an architect in the broad sense of the word.  An architect should listen to the client and guide them through the process from programming, to design, to construction administration.  This involves identifying their needs, designing solutions that are beautiful, functional, buildable, and within budget.  Doing so requires having a clear understanding of which construction procurement method is best suited for a particular project type and client.

As a capital projects project manager, I managed design and construction of a wide range of projects, all of which were completed under budget.

As State Capital Outlay Cost Review Architect, I oversee billions of dollars of capital projects.

As a registered architect, Class-A Contractor, and certified cost estimator, I understand that whether the project is one hundred thousand dollars or one hundred million dollars, the client’s desires are the same; make it functional, beautiful, on-time , and on-budget.
